Almost 400 athletes from 26 teams showed up to Jones Youth Recreation Park last Friday for the Emporia State Planet Sub Cross Country Invitational. The Hornet men, led by junior Jacob Bull, were fourth overall. The women placed seventh as a team.
In the men’s 8k race, Bull finished with a time of 26:55 to place ninth, followed by junior Morgan Riggs with at time of 27:21to place 16th. Senior David Keach also managed to sneak into the top 25 of 171 male runners with a time of 27:43.
In the women’s 5k, sophomore Lindsay Cuadra led the women with a time of 20:38, taking 27th place out of 154 runners. With a time of 20:42, freshman Emily Schoenfeld was the next best runner for the Hornets, trailing two places behind Cuadra in 29th place.
“I felt like I could’ve done better, but there were a lot of factors, like the wind and heat, that contributed to me and all the competitors (not doing) as well as last year,” Cuadra said. “I was happy with my placing overall and for next week, I plan to go out faster and keep consistency in the middle portion of my race.”
On Saturday, the Hornets travel to Lawrence for the Rim Rock Classic, the last race before the MIAA Cross Country Championships Oct. 16 in Pittsburg.
