Vocabulary for younger generation needs some, like, repair

As a generation, some things that we do may seem odd or dumb to other generations. It could be body piercing, tattoos, or maybe just the use of the word “like.”

This semester I had to interview for the second part of the teacher’s program and I was told that the interviewers really disfavor the use of the word “like.” I totally understand because who wants someone teaching kids that uses “like” all the time.

Well, anyone that knows me should know I use “like” a lot. I really do not like using the word, but it seems to be one of those horrible habits that I sometimes don’t even realize I do. However, I do have to say that as I was preparing for the interview, I became much more aware of how often I say it.

This whole thing got me really thinking about how dumb the word is. We are not even using the word correctly either. The word “like” is used to show similarities and fondness for people or things. We use it to replace other words, such as said or thinking.

I do not know if originally the word was used because it sounded cool or what, but now it just sounds dumb. I would really like to get a time machine to go back and slap the crap out of the person who got this whole thing started.

If you really sit back and listen to someone who says the word a lot, you’ll see how dumb it sounds. This whole usage of the word has really gone way too far. I never said it that much when I was younger, but now it seems that it is in almost every sentence I say.

We really need to kick this “like” habit, so we can all sound more intelligent and not like valley girls from the 1980s. This is a seriously bad habit that is making our generation sound like complete morons.

Of course, I am including myself in this too. I say it more than I need to and I really need to stop. I do not seem to do it at all when I write; it is only when I speak. It gets really annoying when I can hear myself saying it, but I still can not seem to stop it. It’s the worst when I’m nervous and I sound like a babbling idiot.

I am really trying to cut back though. It very hard when it has become a staple in your vocabulary, linking thoughts to each other, but this staple needs to be removed and replaced. Instead of using the word “like” just use the word that is supposed to go there and we all should be fine.
