Theories predict end of world in ‘12

Many say that college is the best four (maybe five and hopefully not six) years of your life. Well, that’s good news for me, because many are also saying that the world is going to end in 2012. So that leaves me just enough time to enjoy my college years before we all cease to exist. Yay me.

Many students who believe the world is ending in 2012 may use it as an excuse to slack off. The world is ending in 2012, so why should I bother with papers, tests and homework? I should eat and drink whatever I want and cause as much mayhem as I please, right? However, many of these students would be surprised to discover that there are six theories that support the 2012 dooms day.

Students would also be interested to know that they are not the only ones concerned about the world ending in 2012. According to abcnews.com a simple Google search for “the end of the world in 2012” will come up with 15,000,000 hits, and YouTube has 65,000 videos posted dealing with the subject.

The first theory is based off the fact that the Mayans, an ancient people known for advanced astrological equipment made out of stone, predicted the world to end on December 21, 2012. But how accurate is their prediction? Well, they accurately predicted the lunar cycle, so anything is possible.

The next theory has to do with spikes in radiation being detected from the sun. The spikes are supposed to reach their peak in 2012. Yikes!

Another interesting theory that points to an early doomsday in 2012 is associated with experiments that are taking place in Europe that deal with particle acceleration. Scientists have designed a 17-mile tunnel that smashes atoms together to find out what makes the Earth work the way it does.

This highly advanced piece of technology has frightened many people in the science community. They say the machine has the potential to diminish the earth into the size of a soccer ball. The trials for this experiment are set to take place in 2012.

The Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park has been building up pressure recently. This is known to geologists as a symbol of increasing volcanic activity underground. Many people may not realize that Yellowstone is actually a supervolcano.

History shows that this supervolcano typically erupts every 65,000 years, and we are well overdue for an eruption. The big bang of Yellowstone will produce so much ash that it will block out the sun for up to 15,000 years. Geologists set the most likely date of eruption in 2012.

If you don’t trust science, take the bible for evidence. Theologists have interpreted the bible to state that the final Armageddon, which is essentially the last battle between good and evil, will take place in 2012.

Finally, researchers at Berkley University have predicted that the Earth is due for a major catastrophe, and we are all probably going to die soon. They say that 2012 is their best guess was to when this catastrophe will occur. They have determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event.

So with all that being said, everyone sleep soundly, and enjoy your life until 2012.

I can't believe this crap made it into the paper. First Sheena's columns, now this? I am glad my student fees are going to the Enquirer now.
relax, this column is satirical.
this is the most ridiculous thing i've ever read. get your facts straight. Yellowstone has been active for a very long time. and it's not just Old Faithful that is under pressure. it's the whole park. the Mayan calander is a horrible way to predict the end of the earth, thats just when they stopped counting time. i'm sure it doesn't say "Earth end here!". they were smarter than that. maybe that's as far as they got and then they all got killed off before they could go any furthur. and check the Bible? what are you an idiot? thats the most stupid thing i've ever heard to check the way the Earth is going to end. Theologians know less than any Scientist on how the Earth is going to form. seriously, did you do any research before you typed up this piece of crap artical?
Are you okay, noname?

I only ask because your response seems so incredibly hateful. I mean, really, you can disagree without calling the poor girl an idiot. Relax.
Noname, did you research the dictionary before you submitted your comment? She was talking about an idea, not endorsing it. Really, asshole?
I am curious if Ms. Ewing would be willing to enlighten us with more info on her third from last paragraph? Which "theologians" are you referring to? Who do you consider a theologian. I would love to know who you get your information from. A name or seven would be so helpful. I haven't seen this claim during any of my bible readings. Could you narrow this down to a book and chapter.

This comment has very little to do with questioning, or caring about Ms. Ewing's religious stance. But I do think it would be nice if our Bulletin reporters would make some attempt to tell us where they are getting their info. "Many think", "many students" "people" seem to be thee go-to source of information for bulletin writers. They really really really really need to start giving us more than their opinions if they want us to take them seriously.

If they won't do it for their teachers or readers, many people (I) would think they would want to do so for future employers who will probably look through past bulletins online to see their style and level of care that they use when writing.

If you're christian, you should read the bible, it says how the world is gonna end... better yet, if you're not christian... pick it up too!
Have you (meaning Who said what?) read many publications? The wording is often found in publications today.

I am simply asking the writer to do what is expected of all journalists. Tell us where you are getting your information and relay that information to us accurately.

Mr "Silly" could (or maybe does?) work for the Bulletin. "The wording is often found in publications today". Thanks for sharing deeper details on the origin of the claims! That is so Bulletinesque! You could write for them!

Honestly "Silly", you might be right. Point us in the way to your wisdom. Share some respectable publications or websites that say that the bible says that the world is ending in 2012. If you trust theologians more than the bible, tell us which ones you trust. Help us agree with you.

Of course it would be much easier for the original journalist to do it for us. But if you are that big of a fan, you can do her homework.

"Holy Bible" You missed a key point of the argument. WHEN and WHERE does the Bible talk about the bible say the world is ending in 2012. Of course it talks about HOW the world will end. It doesn't say WHEN. 2012? I am so sick of people saying..."the bible says so" So many people make up whatever they want because they think others won't pick up the big book to prove them wrong. Narrow it down to one of the 60+ books or don't quote it.

The rest of us students have to quote our sources. I think the bulletin writers should to.

Again, this is not about religion but about poor reporting and the student's who expect more. If the Bulletin writers want to enlighten us to things that they care about, they should tell us where to find more information.

Who Said What- There are 66 Books in the bible, but I'm sure you already knew that, and consider reading the last book of the bible. It's kinda funny how some books start in the beginning and finish at the end... Think about it ;)
...regardless, the bottom line is that it is very interesting that many theories intersect in this upcoming year...

The authors points are valid. It is hard to do other than whet the appetite on this subject in a limited forum.
The author did state that "Yellowstone is actually a supervolcano" and so they actually agree with you, 'noname,' that "it's not just Old Faithful that is under pressure. it's the whole park." The author said that the heightened pressure in Old Faithful was a "sign of" a supervolcano, not that the geyser itself was the supervolcano... And, 'Who Said What?' the author agrees with you, too--notice that she said "Theologists have interpreted the bible to state...," NOT "the Bible says."
kabam! lalalalalala mmmmmmmmmm dumdideedum
A more important year is 2009, as it is the year that will see the disintigration of the US dollar, which will create its own apocolyptic havoc.
Please if you are going to talk about the US going to hell because you're dumb, then spell everything correctly.
