Anime/Obsession Club members to take pie for funds, celebrate fourth anniversary
A group of Emporia State students with a strong passion for anime, manga and Japanese culture and a strong connection to other Anime clubs will be raising funds this week by taking a pie to the face starting today.
“Through the years we have branched out and made friends with Kansas University’s Anime club, other fans all over the country and worked with the Emporia Public Library to provide an outlet for teenaged fans in the community” said Melissa Buckley, junior information resources major and club president.
The Anime/Obsession club is now a recognized student organization on campus and will celebrate its fourth anniversary today.
The group was organized to recognize Japan through its visual media. The club now includes a large group of ESU students.
To promote the organization as well as raise funds for next year’s events, the Anime/Obsession club will hold its annual fundraiser entitled “Pie an Officer.” Beginning today the club members will have a table set up in Memorial Union Mainstreet from 10 to 2 through Thursday where they will be promoting their fundraiser.
As tradition holds, the names of the current and former executive council members will have their names and club nicknames on a series of cups. The cups will be placed on the table with club members. Donated money will be placed in the cup which bears the name of the club member the donor wishes to see pied.
On May 3 at Hammond Park, the club will host their fourth birthday party. The party will celebrate the history and accomplishments of the organization made over the years since they became a RSO at ESU.
At the party, the club will collect their final funds. The collected money is then tallied from each of the cups that were set in the union. The anime/obsession member that collects the greatest amount will have the privilege of being pied.
“The council member that earns the most money gets the reward of a pie in the face, usually made of whipped cream and graham crackers,” Buckley said.
The traditional pie will be used on all members except for the club’s media officer.
“If I get pied, the exception will be made and a banana cream pie will be used,” said Andrew Pease, senior computer science major.
