Tennis swept by SBU; women beat UNO

The Emporia State tennis team finished up a busy week of home matches against an MIAA opponent and an out-of-conference foe. The Hornets hosted Southwest Baptist and Nebraska-Omaha on consecutive days.

On Friday, the Hornets took on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats with both squads. Neither was able to pull out a victory against the strong squads from Southwest Baptist. The women fell, 4-5, even after victories by Marcela Bayon, Natalie Villaflor, and Audrey Sherman. Men also fell to the #23-ranked Bearcat squad, 0-9, on Friday.

On Saturday, the women had matches scheduled against Nebraska-Omaha. With the better weather, the Hornets played better tennis. In singles competition, the Hornets went 5-1, and 2-1 in doubles play.

Hornets head coach John Cayton said that his team enjoys playing in the good weather. Most of the early season has been frustrating due to poor weather.

“It’s been nice the past week or so. We’ve been able to get out and play outdoors,” Cayton said. “We need to get out and play more since we haven’t had many matches compared to other conference teams.”

The squads are traveling to South Dakota on April 11 for matches against Minnesota State-Mankato and Augustana College. The results from the men’s April 8 matches against Southeastern Oklahoma State were not posted at the time of printing.
