Track teams get 2nd at home meet
Both the men and women’s track teams got second place at the Papa John’s D-II Challenge over the weekend in Emporia. The women picked up second place with 120 points and fell just six points short of tying for first place. The men finished with 126 points as the Hornets edged Pittsburg State for the second place finish.
Senior distance runner Jonel Rossbach won the honors of athlete of the meet on the track and freshman Josh Honeycutt also got the honors of athlete of the meet on the field.
Rossbach finished first in both the 1500 meter run and the 3000m run. In the 1500m, Rossbach finished with a time of 4:40.58 to win the race by nearly four seconds. Rossbach won the 3000m with a time of 9:59.37 as the second place runner finished with a time of 10:55.34.
Honeycutt finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.83m (22-05.00 feet). Honeycutt won the triple jump with a distance of 15.43m (50-07.50 feet). His jump was also good enough for a provisional qualifying mark in the event.
At the Open Multi-events at the beginning of the weekend, junior Craig Saalfeld got sixth place in the decathlon on Friday. He fell just 63 points shy of picking up a provisional qualifying mark as he finished the decathlon with 6,237 points. Senior Ryan Green finished tenth overall in the heptathlon with a career best 4,089 points.
Saalfeld picked up a second place finish in the 1500m run and fourth place in the 110m hurdles. He also got 12th in pole vault, 15th in discus, and 16th in javelin. Green finished second in the long jump and also placed ninth in javelin and 14th in the 800m run.
Sophomore Brooke Kent won the 100m dash with a time of 11.99 seconds. Kent also won the long jump with a leap of 5.75m (18-10.50 feet). Junior Jaclyn Sill finished with a time of 58.96 in the 400m dash which earned her a first place finish. Junior Connie Philips picked up a first place finish in the javelin as she finished with a throw of 42.21m (138-06 feet).
Freshman Kenton Lonberger got a second place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 10.54 seconds. Lonberger also got second in the 200m dash with a time of 21.43 seconds.
Senior Eric Wellman was able to win the 5000m run with a time of 15:31.59 as freshman Skyler Delmott finished second in the 10,000m with 32:34.66 and senior Brock Ternes got third with a time of 32:53.26.
In the high jump, sophomore Dustin Andrews won the even with a leap of 2.05m (6-08.75 feet) and sophomore Alex Pyle finished second with a height of 2.00m (6-06.75 feet).
