Freshman distance runner Sloane Kern strides through the finish line at a home meet this season. The men and women's track teams will have its final week of competition before the MIAA Championships.

Members of the Emporia State track and field team will be heading in two directions as three members will go to the MIAA multi-events in Hays and others to the University of Oklahoma.

“I have high Expectations for myself. I will try to do the best that I can do in each event, that’s all I can ask for. Hopefully that will put me in a spot to win,” said junior Craig Saalfeld.

Saalfeld will be participating in the decathlon and senior Ryan Green and sophomore Brooke Kent will be competing in the heptathlon.

“I am very excited to hear how they do. Each one of them are very talented athletes, and are capable of being some of the top scorers in our conference,” said sophomore Jennifer Robinson.

There they will be using one final opportunity to prepare for the MIAA championships.

“This really is the final tune up for the MIAA. With any athlete we take it’s just one more opportunity for them to prepare and improve,” said head coach Dave Harris.

Robinson thinks the coaches help push the team enough to do well in outings.

“The coaches give us confidence, and push us hard in every work out so that we will be able to be the top in our conference,” said Robinson

All of the members attending the meet at the Oklahoma are looking forward to a chance to improve personal scores and get ready for the season finale.

“I will use this weekend as basically a tune-up for conference and try

to move up on the conference list. I see my teammates and I getting some pr's and possibly breaking some school records,” said sophomore Doug Marshall.

Members of the team believe that team support has made them stronger.

“The main thing that makes us a strong team is how we push each other.

You not only see this in practice but also in competition,” Marshall said.
