From 12:30-1:30 p.m. there will be a break for lunch, and hot glass demonstrations will resume at 1:30 p.m. and continue through 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., there will be a BBQ and potluck dinner, as well as live entertainment, followed by an art auction at 7 p.m.

This year’s featured artist is Ross Richmond from the Seattle, Wash. area. Richmond will work with glass students through the week of April 8 on hot glass forming techniques and processes, as well as offer critiques for students’ work.

“(Richmond) started working with glass at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1991,” according to a press release from the Eppink Gallery. “He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art with a major in Glass and a minor in Metals… (his) pieces are typically narrative, working mainly with figurative elements and symbolic objects.”

Proceeds from the auction will be used to fund future visiting artists, supplies and equipment and educational field trips for glass students.

Tuesday night, the SMART cabinet in Plumb Hall Room 307 was broken into, and some equipment was allegedly stolen. The missing items include a monitor, an amplifier, an optical mouse and a wireless mouse, said Mel Storm, interim chair of the department of English, Modern Languages and Journalism.

Sgt. Don Shafer and Officer Penny Mains of campus police are in charge of investigating the incident, but The Bulletin was unable to reach either Shafer or Mains by press time last night.

In addition to the missing equipment, the SMART cabinet was damaged, said Gwen Larson, assistant director of Marketing and Media Relations, who received information regarding the incident from Police and Safety.

According to the Annual Security and Fire Safety report in 2011, three incidences of burglary occurred on-campus, two of which occurred in the residence halls.

Storm said in an email to the English department that the cabinet and missing equipment would be replaced and urged everyone to be mindful of locking not only the cabinets, but also the doors to classrooms as well. He also said that it is likely the door to 307 had been left unlocked.

Anyone with information related to the incident should contact Campus Police and Safety at 341-5337.

At next week’s Faculty Senate meeting, President Michael Shonrock will speak on the Bob Dreiwer Report. The university contracted Robert Driewer as a consultant to ask departments about their priorities and what each department would do with either more funding, less funding or the same funding.

The report comes after the recent Noel-Levitz consultation report on improving retention at Emporia State. Shonrock will discuss the results of the report, as well as the university’s plans to use them.

Driewer has experience with hospital budgeting, which derives funding from multiple sources, similar to how universities are funded. Driewer looked for common themes among the departments and has made suggestions on how to implement some of the suggestions provided by faculty and staff.

The Faculty Senate meeting is open to anyone wishing to attend. It will be at 3:30 p.m. next Tuesday in the Preston Family Room in the Memorial Union.

Dennis Etzell will tell his story about taking risks to oppose violence against women at 7 p.m. tonight in the Preston Family Room in the Memorial Union. Etzell is an English lecturer at Washburn University.

Etzell’s talk will focus on his experience protesting an ad portraying violence against a woman and the backlash from both those who created the ad and other women that followed.

“I certainly don’t have all the answers on how to prevent violence and sexual assault,” Etzell said in a press release from Ethnic and Gender Studies. “However, my discussion and questioning opens up several opportunities to further discuss and speak out against our overall culture’s seeming ‘acceptance,’ silence and apathy about these issues.”

Contact Karen Smith, director of Ethnic and Gender Studies, at 341-5570 for further information.

A fire prevention workshop will be held from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday in Webb Hall 1. The Office of International Education and Student Affairs are working in conjunction with the City of Emporia Fire Department to bring this workshop, “Zheng Lin and Yawei Fan: A Tribute,” about fire safety and prevention to the general public in memory of Lin and Fan, two international students from China who lost their lives in an apartment fire near campus last October.

“The purpose of this workshop is to prevent similar incidents and educate people, especially young people who have never lived on their own, about fire hazards in apartments or homes, basic fire safety techniques, and – a commonly misunderstood concept – their rights as a tenant in regards to fire prevention,” said the OIE in an email sent to Recognized Student Organization yesterday afternoon.

According to Bulletin archives and authorities from the Emporia Fire Department, the fire was caused by combustibles left too close to a floor furnace, including clothing, paper and other personal items.

“After the fatal fire last fall, we realized that we have students in our community that are not familiar with the type of heating equipment that they may encounter in off campus housing here in Emporia,” said Tom Andrews, fire marshal, in an interview with The Bulletin last spring.

Captain Larry Bess, Battalion Chief Rex Fisher and Andrews will speak at the event.

Fans will have several opportunities to show support. Around 4 p.m. today, the players will eat their team meal in the Memorial Union then head to the stadium to dress for the game. The team will leave from the north entrance to the Union (by the Office of International Education and Career Services), walk through the parking lot on the east side of Wooster Lake, then down the street in front of Singular/Trusler to enter the east side of the stadium. Fans are encouraged to line the team’s route and cheer them on as they make their way to the locker room.

During pregame, juniors Gabe Andrews and Benny Bowden, who form the musical duo Gabe &Benny, will perform their original ESU hype song “Right Now.” The Stingers, ESU’s dance team, the cheer squad and Corky will help engage the crowd to participate in the song.

Tickets for Thursday’s game, designated as the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Game, cost $9 for adult general admission, $7 for child/senior general admission and $13 for reserved chair back seating on the west side. Ticket booths open at 5:30 p.m., and stadium gates open at 6 p.m.

The other finalists are Bill McKinney from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Cheryl Norton from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and Ray Alden from Northern Illinois University

VSU has 13,000 students and is located on 168 acres near the southern border of Georgia.
