U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, a Kansas Democrat, believes the conduct of President Donald Trump necessitates action by the Republican commander in chief’s own Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.

Davids, who serves the 3rd District in the Kansas City area, said Trump couldn’t be trusted to uphold constitutional duties as president until inauguration Jan. 20 of President-elect Joe Biden. His Electoral College victory was affirmed by Congress following a riot among Trump allies Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol.

“For the first time in history,” Davids said, “we have a president who should be impeached twice but because of the time constraints and inaction of Senate Republicans, I urge the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment now.”

She said violence that interrupted the Electoral College vote counting and challenges to state certification of results demonstrated how fragile democracy was and how much work would be required to preserve it.

“Our democracy, safety and security is at stake,” she said.
