Update: 3/10/217- According to a press release from the Emporia Police Department, the victim has been identified as Mahogany Brooks, 38. She was found in the hallway of the second floor and appeared to have been shot multiple times. She was declared dead on the scene. The alleged shooter has been identified as Sony Uk. Uk ran into Brook's apartment when he spotted the officers. The officers managed to talk Uk and got him to come to the door and he gave himself up without incident. A shotgun found in the apartment is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.  

Update: Authorities have confirmed that one person is dead and another wounded following a shooting at an apartment complex across the street from the Emporia State campus. The name of the deceased, who was identified as a black woman, was not released. There was also no word on the condition of the victim who was wounded, or on the identity of the suspect who was apprehended earlier. The university administration had issued no statement on the shooting as of midnight Thursday.

Update: Suspect has been apprehended, according to authorities. Captain Jim Tilton of the Emporia Police Department declined to comment. 

A suspect wanted in connection with a shooting Thursday night at Heartland Apartments, 1325 Merchant, across the street from the ESU campus, apparently remained at large as of 10:55 p.m. The apartment complex remained cordoned off by authorities, and the residents are being sheltered in Cram Science Hall. The shooting occurred about 9:50 p.m. and ESU issued an alert at 10:46 p.m. urging students to remain in secure locations. Developments will be posted as they become available.
