Sarah Spicer, Emporia State alumna and first place winner of the Peter O.E. Bekker Scholarship, stands next to the second place winner, Leo DeLuca, on Sept. 7. Both attend the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

2018 Emporia State graduate, Sarah Spoon—now Sarah Spicer—received first place in the Peter O.E. Bekker Scholarship.

“The first award of $5,000 will be granted to Sarah Spoon of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism,” the press club’s foundation said in the program notes describing the Peter O.E. Bekker Scholarship. “Sarah’s passion for investigative journalism and holding people accountable for their actions greatly inspired us. We also love Sarah’s focus on protecting the ability of journalists to do their job of fair reporting, something currently under attack. We look forward to watching Sarah continue to hold accountable those who attack freedom of the press and know she go on to do amazing things for our profession.”

Spoon, a dual major in English and history, was editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper from 2016-2017 and again in 2018-2019. Currently, she attends Columbia University in their journalism graduate program.
