As an international student attending a university in Kansas, I am able to see two different sides of the U.S. There are the people who want change at all costs, and people who want to rely on the safety of a traditional America.
People might call this “the right” and “the left” or the Republicans and the Democrats, but either way, it’s a feud that has been going on for a long time.
No matter what you call it, one thing is for sure. This fight has turned into an unhealthy rivalry and it is taking a toll on young people.
As young people, we live in an era that allows us to access information on demand. However, there is so much information out there that young people sometimes make the mistake of choosing different versions of the “truth.”
This is dangerous because young people begin to choose what they believe based on their feelings, their compassion, their anger, their pride or their fear.
They have a choice of being uncomfortable with the purest truth, and instead trade this discomfort for a completely comfortable “truth” that is most convenient to them.
This is why, in my opinion, that when it comes to young democrats and young republicans, minds are constantly molded by misguided values and ideas.
A lot of information is branded as correct or true because it’s convenient. This creates separation and an unhealthy environment for young minds to form in.
A lot of young leftist ideals revolve around more acceptance. This is despite the fact that, socially, the U.S. is already a very safe space compared to other places. The young leftists focus on getting rid of all kinds of negativity or critique and this is convenient for them because then nothing they do will be their responsibility.
On the other side, the young right tends to think that everything is perfect. That mass shootings don’t have to do with the availability of guns. This is also convenient because then something the young right loves so much will not be seen as something that can be negative.
At the same time, there are people on both sides who do not choose the truth out of convenience, and those people are the people who would and should push your country forward.
However, this is a small minority. What is most important is that young people take a step back from their defensive position and let in the pure, raw truth, instead of what is convenient.
