Emporia State women’s soccer team had their first shutout of the season taking a 6-0 victory over Missouri Western Griffons on Oct. 2.
“Felt pretty good, you know we played a lot of close games so it’s refreshing to have one that we opened up the score a little bit early,” head coach Bryan Sailer said. “So kind of scored early and our first shutout of the year too and granted they hit the post a few times, overall it was a good team win. I mean six goals, you know, how do you beat that?”
The score was tied 0-0 until 17 minutes into the game when senior Mackenzie Dimarco scored the first goal after the Hornets had a strong start with multiple goal attempts prior.
Graduate student Aislinn Hughes followed Dimarco’s lead making a goal three minutes later and three minutes after that Dimarco scored again, her second point of the game. Giving the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Mikayla Limpe also scored right before halftime giving the Hornets a 4-0 lead at half and marking Limpe’s first career goal.
Coming back from half, sophomore Haley Sparks made a goal and Dimarco hit her third goal finishing the game with a 6-0 win, the Hornets’ first shutout of the season.
Dimarco hit her second consecutive hat trick (three goals in one game) and surpassed 100 career points.
Freshman Mackenzi Goen tallied five saves in the second half alone.
Dimarco thought the highlight of the game was the first goal because it set the tone.
“It (the first goal) changed our whole momentum and then we stepped up. We kind of fell down the second half but we were able to bring it back up even with subs coming and the momentum was still there.” Dimarco said.
