Emporia State Hornets fell by seven points to the University of Central Missouri Mules for the Homecoming game on Oct. 19.

“(UCM) has a really good program and really good offense,” said Parker Bass, senior defensive line. “Obviously statistically speaking and you know we just gotta come out and play our game...We’ve just gotta step that up a notch.”

The loss began in the first 10 minutes of the game with a 29 yard field goal from Chris Diddle, sophomore UCM kicker, according to the Hornet Sports Website.

The Mules went 63-yards in 12 plays before ESU took action. At 52 seconds left in the first quarter, Koby Wilkerson, junior running back, scored from 3 yards putting UCM at 10-7, the website continued.

Although a sack cost them the ball, the Hornets took themselves out of the field goal area and kept the ball for five minutes,” according to the Mule’s Monday Afternoon Pick Me Up on Twitter.

In the beginning of the second quarterESU came back with a 5-yard run by Calvin Boyce, freshman running back.

By the end of the second quarter, ESU and UCM were tied 20-20.

“Field position played a big role in the third quarter with the first five possessions of the quarter all starting inside the offensive teams 25 yard line,” said the Hornet Football recap.

With Hornets failing to score in the third quarter, Brook Boles, UCM senior quarterback, made a 3-yard run adding 6-points. The game ended with a 26-yard pass from Dalton Cowan, sophomore quarterback, adding seven points, but not enough to catch up to UCM’s 34.

“Dalton Cowan was 36 of 57 for 313 yards with two touchdowns and an interception,” said the ESU Hornet’s web. Rasheed Noel had eight catches for 70 yards in addition to his three carries for 48 yards and a touchdown. Cole Schumacher also had eight receptions for 53 yards while Wil Amos had four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. Carlos Grace had 11 carries for 58 yards on the ground for Emporia State.”
