Physical Education to host Kansas Kids Fitness Day

The Physical Education Department will host the Kansas Kids Fitness Day from 9-11 a.m. tomorrow on the football practice fields. In case of inclement weather, the Fitness Day will take place in the HPER gyms.

About 300 local third graders are expected to participate in the Fitness Day, which has occurred for at least the last three years, said Cody Stockwell, junior physical education major.

Stations with field day activities, including tag, relay, water games and beanbag toss, will be available. Stockwell said that this year’s theme is “Wild West and Kansas History.”

The students who participate will receive goody bags with jump ropes and snacks that are being assembled by a physical education methods class.

The Emporia Farmer’s Market will reopen at 8 a.m. May 2 in the Merchant Street parking lot between 7th and 12th Ave.

The farmer’s market takes place every Saturday during early spring, expanding to both Saturday and Wednesday as more locally grown produce become available later in the year.

Tracey Graham, manager of the farmer’s market, said that asparagus, rhubarb, lettuce, radishes, green onions, a wide array of baked goods and fresh chicken eggs will all be on sale at Saturdays’ market.

WAW Library accepting ‘Food for Fines’

Until Friday, May 22, students may donate canned goods and non-perishable items to the William Allen White Library lobby in exchange for paying library fines. All donations will be given to the Salvation Army Pantry, which provides local families and individuals with food.

This is the third semester WAW library has done Food for Fines, said Terri Summey, head of access services. One food item equals $1 in fines, up to $30 on an individual account.

Summey said that, with the current economy, it is likely that more Lyon County residents will need to use the services provided by the Salvation Army Pantry.

Guidelines for food donations include only non-perishable canned goods and packaged items; food must not be outdated, according to date stamping on the package; packages must be unopened and undamaged; no candy or produce; and food cannot be used to pay replacement costs for damaged or unreturned materials or for processing fees.

Students who have accumulated more than $10 in fines by the end of the semester may be blocked from enrolling for classes, viewing their transcripts, and accessing financial aid.

National Pride Week

April 20-24 is National PRIDE Week and activities are scheduled at Emporia State throughout the week. To kick-off the week, the National Day of Silence, a silent protest against hate crimes towards LGBTQ people, will be held tomorrow.

From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. April 20, a balloon wall will be set up on the Memorial Union Main Street. Balloons will have hateful words written on the outside and will reveal inspirational words when popped, according to Derrek Zietz, junior communication major and education chair of PRIDE (People Respecting Individuality and Diversity in Education). At 7 p.m., PRIDE will hold a meeting in the Flint Hills Room.

A PRIDE panel of five to seven PRIDE members will be available to answer anonymous questions at 7 p.m. April 21 in the Flint Hills Room.

For Ally Appreciation Day April 22, a booth will be set up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Main Street where LGBTQ allies can sign their names and will be given a rose in appreciation, Zietz said. At 7 p.m. in the Kanza Room, Deb Gerish, associate professor of social sciences, will speak about coming out as a LGBTQ ally.

Sylvia Guererro, a LGBTQ activist, will speak at 7 p.m. April 23 in the Kanza Room.

The final event for National Pride Week is the Pride Prom, with the theme, “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a tribute to actors and actresses of the black and white film era, Zietz said.

The prom will take place at 7 p.m. April 24 in the Colonial Ballroom in the Memorial Union.

ASG Allocations Workshops
Associated Student Government will host a series of workshop sessions for Recognized Student Organizations next week to prepare for allocations.

Any organizations that receive allocation money have to send a representative to at least one of the workshop sessions or that organization’s allocation money will be swept, said Whitney McGinnis, senior integrated studies major and ASG fiscal affairs chair.

RSO representatives should bring financial information like travel expenses and how they spent allocation money to the workshop sessions. The workshops should last about one hour, McGinnis said.

The workshops will be held at 4 p.m. April 20 in the Messenger Room, 3 p.m. April 22 in the Heritage Room and 4 p.m. April 23 in the Heritage Room.

If an organization is unable to send a representative to one of the sessions, a time to meet can be set up with McGinnis. She can be contacted at wmcginni@emporia.edu.

PIE

At 5:30 next Wednesday in front of the CSI office, Darcy Miller, local animal advocate, will team up with the Program to Improve Emporia to hold an open-forum style discussion to try to create an organization for proper animal care.
Miller is known for speaking to the owners of animals that are improperly cared for or mistreated and says that, most of the time, the issue is that owners do not know how to properly care for animals.

‘Freedom Writers’ speaker to visit ESU

Erin Gruwell, an educator and inspirational speaker, will speak at 7 p.m. April 28 in Albert Taylor Hall. Her lecture is titled “Becoming a Catalyst for Change.”

In 1999, Gruwell published “The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them,” based on journals kept by her students. Actress Hilary Swank portrayed Gruwell in the 2007 film adaptation titled “Freedom Writers.”

Gruwell is the founder and current president of the Freedom Writers Foundation, an organization that spreads Gruwell’s Freedom Writers teaching method around the nation.

Blythe Eddy, associate director for Student Involvement, Programming, and Community Service said that Gruwell’s message is something every student should hear.

Eddy also said she took pride in the collaborative effort students at ESU showed in getting Gruwell to come speak.

Over 15 student organizations on campus are sponsoring Gruwell’s visit, especially Community Hornets, Eddy said.

Community Hornets is “a program dedicated to connecting Emporia State University students to the surrounding community through service projects,” according to the organization’s Web site.

Program Discontinuance Hearing

A Program Discontinuance Hearing will be held today at 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s PDK Room. The School of Library Information Management is discontinuing the Master of Science in Legal Information Management and the Certificate in Legal Information Management.

Dwight Moore, associate professor of biology and chair of academic affairs, said that the hearing is mandated by the program discontinuance policy and that the hearing is a chance for faculty and students to voice concerns.

Moore said that there are currently no full-time faculty teaching courses in the program and that it has been nearly two years since any students have been involved in the program.

PRIDE Day of Silence

A Day of Silence forum will be held during the evening of April 15 in Memorial Union’s PDK Room. The national Day of Silence is April 17.

Luke Wolford, sophomore sociology major and PRIDE executive chair, said that 15-20 members of PRIDE participated in last year’s Day of Silence.

According to www.dayofsilence.org, the Day of Silence is “a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment – in effect, the silencing – experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies.”

The Day of Silence began at the University of Virginia in 1996.

One more brief on its way after Zach Hughes sends it to me!
